From Middle English warp, werp, from Old English wearp, warp (“a warp, threads stretched lengthwise in a loom, twig, osier”), from Proto-Germanic *warpą (“a warp”). Cognate with Middle Dutch warp, Middle Low German warp, German werfen, Danish and Swedish varp.
